Meet Adela, Healthcare Assistant Practitioner at the Check House Nursing and Residential Home (Cannon Care Homes)

Adela works as a healthcare assistant practitioner at a nursing and residential home specialising in caring for those with dementia. Her role includes:

• assist and support registered practitioners in all aspects of service delivery
• establishing and carrying out routine monitoring of patients
• assisting in total patient assessment
• coordination of care (including referrals to other practitioners)

Adela’s career journey

Adela started working at The Check House 12 years ago and was offered the position of senior 5 years ago after completing her Level 3 Health & Social Care Apprenticeship with t2 group.

Adela started the Level 5 Healthcare Assistant Practitioner Apprenticeship to expand her knowledge and clinical skills allowing her to work alongside the registered nurses and provide enhanced care to their residential clients.

Adela’s next steps

Adela is planning to continue her learning. Adela comments ‘I’m excited to have been given the opportunity to complete the training and programmes I am offered as I have worked at The Check House for almost 12 years, I enjoy my job a lot and plan to continue working here for the foreseeable future’.

She describes ‘My training has made me more responsible in my role as I feel more confident in my abilities and knowledge and gaining more experience has enabled me to work more independently. Although, I still communicate and work alongside the registered nurses frequently. Working towards my Apprenticeship has only increased my knowledge, skills and confidence further’.

Adela feels she has increased her skillset by working with the registered nurses and performing skills related to the units she has completed, such as taking physiological measurements and has become confident in performing these.

She also feels she has a better understanding now of person-centred care since starting the programme and applying this to her work as well as discussing this with her colleagues.

What advice would Adela give to anyone interested in a career in healthcare?

Adela would recommend working in healthcare to anyone but believes you must have compassion and really want to support people in their everyday lives.

Adela believes that there are many opportunities and if you’re dedicated and want to make a difference, you can progress and see your salary rise.
